WABA NIGERIA

The West African Bankers’ Association (WABA) is an Association of all the banks within the ECOWAS Sub-region. It was inaugurated on 10 th October, 1981 in Accra, Ghana based on the recommendation of the Governors of the Central Banks within the sub-region and approved by the council of Heads of States. It was created because of the crucial roles banks were bound to play in the successful execution of intra-regional trade and payments.
WABA is an association of all the commercial and specialised banks and other credit institutions in the sub-region and it is one of the organs of ECOWAS Commission..

Mission Statement

The mission of the West African Bankers’ Association, is to raise the standard of banking and financial sector to international standard by promoting good corporate governance practices in banks and other financial institutions in Nigeria and West African sub-region.

Vison

To be the reference point for all the Professional Associations of Bankers in the WestAfrican sub-region.

OBJECTIVES OF WABA

The West African Bankers’ Association was created with the following objectives:
1. To provide and exchange information on banking practice in the sub-region and to serve as a forum for discussion of common problems.
2. To enhance the promotion and strengthening of link between the banks in the sub-region.
3. To serve as an intermediary between the banks and the West African sub-regional Committee of the Association of African Central Banks (ACCB).
4. To seek ways and means by which the Association can contribute to the development of Commerce, industry and agriculture in the sub-region in particular and Africa in general.
5. To identify available training facilities in the sub-region and disseminate same to member banks with a view to exchanging trainers and students and
6. To play the role of policy advocacy for banks within the subregion. With the headquarters in Freetown, Sierra Leone, each country has its Local Chapter.

The Association’s Regional Secretariat is located in Freetown, Sierra Leone and each country has its Local Chapter represented by the National Bankers’ Association. It is pertinent to state here that, each country has a local chapter of the Association and the Secretariat of the Local Chapter in Nigeria is located at The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Bankers’ House, Pc 19, Adeola Hopewell Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
